Heads up, Metro Manila. The volcanic smog, or vog, from Taal Volcano has drifted all the way to the city, bringing some unwelcome air conditions along with it. Vice Mayor Geraldine Ornales of Lemery, Batangas, gave an update early this morning, emphasizing the need for everyone to take precautions.

"As of August 19, 2024, at 6:30 AM, we're experiencing volcanic smog caused by Taal Volcano," she shared.

The good news? Taal Volcano remains at Alert Level 1, meaning there's no immediate danger of an eruption. But that doesn't mean we should let our guard down. The Phivolcs Taal Volcano Advisory confirmed at 8:00 AM that the situation remains the same, but the vog is no joke.

In Lemery, classes at all levels, both public and private, have been suspended for the day. Vice Mayor Ornales urged her fellow Lemereños to take extra care. "Please wear face masks to reduce the inhalation of this harmful smog. Drink plenty of water to ease throat irritation, and if you don't have anything important to do outside, it's best to stay indoors. Let's stay alert and be prepared."

The vog, which is caused by Taal’s continuous emission of sulfur dioxide, has created a hazy atmosphere that can cause irritation to the eyes, throat, and respiratory system. With the volcanic plume towering at 2,400 meters and drifting north-northwest, it's no surprise the smog has reached the metro. The Taal Volcano is also experiencing slight ground deformation, with some inflation on its northern and southeastern flanks.

Authorities remind the public to stay clear of Taal Volcano Island, especially its Main Crater and the Daang Kastila fissures, as these areas remain under a Permanent Danger Zone. Also, no flying close to the volcano! The possibility of steam-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, and even minor ashfall is still on the table.

So, Manila residents, it's time to keep those face masks handy, stay hydrated, and stay informed. The vog may be here for a while, and it’s best to stay prepared!
