3 jailbreakers die in Masbate shootout with cops

LEGAZPI CITY – Three of four inmates who bolted the Masbate provincial jail on Tuesday were slain in a shootout with police operatives in Milagros town, Masbate province on Thursday.

Maj. Maria Luisa Calubaquib, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 5 (Bicol), said in an interview that slain in the shootout were Bryan Basulgan, 22, of Barangay Cabas-an Aroroy town; and Jose Jeven Fuentes, 30, of Barangay Calasuche, and Richard Espayos, 37, of Barangay Cayabon, both in Milagros.

"They were facing criminal offenses for several counts of rape, (and) illegal firearms possession and trading," Calubaquib said.

The escapees fired on the police tracker team from the provincial and Milagros town police stations, that was pursuing them in Barangay Bonbon, prompting the latter to engage them in a firefight.

However, the fourth inmate, who was not identified, was able to flee.

Recovered from the fight scene was a 12-gauge homemade shotgun. (PNA)
