Community quarantine helped reduce COVID-19 cases, DOH data show

(Updated 9:42 am)

The implementation of the enhanced community quarantine has helped reduce the number of COVID-19 cases according to a mathematics professor of the University of the Philippines.

Dr. Virgilio Sison said ECQ has slowed the rate of increase resulting in smaller number of daily cases of COVID-19. Sison based his observation on figures from the official daily reports of the Department of Health (DOH).

The professor however pointed out that it is still too early to determine the significant effects of the quarantine as more tests of COVID-19 cases are needed to validate the reports.

“It may then be premature to say, based on actual data, that we have reached the anticipated peak and whether the curve has already started to flatten. We need to wait for several more weeks before we can make a stronger interpretation,” Sison said.

“However, the ECQ seems to have an effect on the slow rate of increase and why the number of daily cases are small, but this observation can only be validated if more tests are conducted,” he added.

The government started implementing the quarantine on March 15.

The DOH reported on Monday 4,932 cases of COVID-19 with 315 deaths and 242 recoveries.
