The Department of Health (DOH) welcomed the appointment of Southern Philippine Medical Center (SPMC) chief Dr. Leopoldo Vega as their newest undersecretary.

“Hindi pa na pag-uusapan para malinaw kung saan ma-assign si Dr. Vega. But it’s a welcome development kasi matagal na rin nagsilbi and he’s an expert in hospital operations,” DOH spokesperson Maria Rosario Vergeire said.

(It’s not been discussed yet where Dr. Vega would be assigned. But it’s a welcome development because he’s served for a long time and he’s an expert in hospital operations)

Vega’s replacement at the SPMC has not yet been named.

Vergeire meanwhile confirmed that DOH Secretary Francisco Duque has already given financial assistance to the relatives of 29 medical frontliners who lost their lives to COVID-19.

She added that they hope to provide financial assistance to the relatives of three other frontliners within the day. She also said 79 health workers who suffered severe coronavirus symptoms will receive P100,000 each in the coming days.

The DOH official called on the public to remain vigilant and stay safe as the risk of COVID-19 remains even if quarantine protocols have eased up nationwide.
