Bantay Dagat personnel have taken custody of a Risso’s dolphin calf that was discovered by fishermen in waters near Barangay Calintaan, Matnog, Sorsogon early Saturday afternoon. Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) officials said the dolphin calf must have been separated from its mother and pod.

BFAR officials added that they can only release the calf when they find its mother. Members of the provincial fisheries office and provincial veterinary services have volunteered to help in the search. They however admit that since dolphins are open sea creatures, the chances of locating its mother and pod are slim.

They added that the calf’s survival is also slim since it is still very young and in poor health. It could not even swim properly when it was discovered. BFAR said the dolphin calf may have to be euthanized if it is not reunited with its pod and mother.
