Senators call for Duque's resignation for "failure of leadership"

A number of senators passed today a resolution calling for the immediate resignation of Health Secretary Francisco Duque for what they deemed as his “failure of leadership” in the government's response to the COVID-19 crisis.

The seven-page resolution dated today, April 16, stated that Duque should immediately step down “for his failure of leadership, negligence, lack of foresight, and inefficiency in the performance of his mandate” as health secretary.

The senators behind the resolution further pointed out that Duque’s leadership has resulted in “poor planning, delayed response, lack of transparency, and misguided and flip-flopping policies and measures in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.”

They noted that Duque’s shortcomings has endangered and continue to endanger the lives of health workers, other frontliners and the Filipino people in general.

Duque has yet to issue a statement.

Documents obtained by the Advocates showed that the resolution was signed by Senate President Vicente Sotto III and Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri and Senators Sonny Angara, Nancy Binay, Grace Poe, Joel Villanueva, Francis Tolentino, Imee Marcos, Manny Pacquiao, Sherwin Gatchalian, Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, Ramon Revilla Jr., Lito Lapid and Panfilo Lacson.
