The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson
This one's popular. A very easy read. It felt like a Saturday night house party when it's just Manson (the author) and I were the only ones left having drunken existential conversations because the rest are passed out and/or vomiting.
Doesn't mean it's not worth the read, though. It will hung you over. Probably similar to the effect of the mixed drinks you feel you will have with Manson.
By just going through its table of contents, it's apparent how counterintuitive this book is compared to other self-help books you will encounter. It will negate your thoughts, then will pull you right back in on why it makes sense. Brutally honest, if I may say. It will make you self-aware. Especially if you are a person brought up thinking you're special. Uhm, you are not. (See what I did there, I Manson-ed you!. Not totally, just read the book.)
The author loves to tell anecdotes, he also likes metaphors. What struck me the most is his story about Rock Star Problems, because I admit that I often evaluate my self-worth against others - instead of asking by what standard should I really measure myself first?
Going back to its very title, Manson basically preaches that in our lifetime, we only have limited amount of fucks to give, so we must choose our fucks wisely. It paves the way to a more grounded life. And advises us to acknowledge our limitations and accept them.
It felt nice to finish it. It makes you ponder on how easily you can hack your way to living a decent life.
