Moalboal town police arrested Cebuana beauty queen Maria Gigante and her Spanish boyfriend for swimming and drinking beer at a beach Sunday afternoon.
This is considered a double violation of the province-wide enhanced community quarantine.
Moalboal Police Senior Master Sergeant Jennelyn Awe said the arrest of Gigante and her boyfriend, Javier Filosa Castro, was done at 5:30 p.m., Sunday in Basdiot Beach. Awe added the two had told checkpoint officers that they were off to Barili to join an outreach activity.
Gigante was crowned Binibining Cebu in 2017. She is a resident of Barangay Bacayan, Cebu City, while Castro is a temporary resident of Cebu City.
Under the Cebu province-issued ECQ law, only Cebu City residents with vehicle pass or those rendering essential services such as doctors, delivery staff, government officials and other such personnel are allowed to move about the province.
Cebu beaches and other public places have been off limits to the public as part of the province’s move to discourage large crowds and avoid the spread of the deadly Covid-19.
Awe said the couple are being kept in an isolation room. Cebu City is currently the top city in the Philippines with the most number of coronavirus cases.
