Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia expressed her desire for a self-sufficient Cebu that can withstand any crisis during her live conference on April 25 which aired on the Capitol’s official Facebook page.
Garcia noted that Cebu still lacks self-sufficiency despite the province’s having vast upland areas that can be used for agriculture. As a result, Cebu still relies on food supplies from other areas.
“From building condominiums to agri-business. I wish to make Cebu able to stand up by itself, self-sustained by the food that we produce because, after all that has happened to us, we will have to go back to basics and food is the most basic,” said Garcia.
The governor also emphasized that everyone in Cebu has to brace for the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, one of which is a possible shortage of food.
Garcia moted the country's dwindling rice supply and rising price of corn due to high demand. She challenged local traders to help the province’s agriculture industry.
Garcia aims to create an Enhanced Countryside Development plan to ensure Cebu's food self-sufficiency once the Covid-19 crisis is over. She also encouraged Cebuanos to move back to the uplands where there is abundant supply of food.
