The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) still has high hopes on the league’s future plans. These include the closing ceremony for Season 82 and the schedule for Season 83.
The target schedule and plans are still on the table, according to outgoing UAAP President Emmanuel Fernandez of current host Ateneo and Executive Director Atty. Rebo Saguisag. There are also possible options available for the league in the “new normal” phase brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
During their interview at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum webcast on June 16, Fernandez said that the UAAP is looking at a structured proposal in place moving forward after shortening Season 82.
Fernandez and Saguisag also expressed their plans on having a full calendar for next season. However, everything still depends on the government’s future rules and regulations.
Among the options available for the UAAP is holding the calendar of events in the same format as the Southeast Asian games. This is similar to holding different sports simultaneously in order to make the season shorter.
“Kung ang volleyball season runs technically from February to May, what’s stopping the UAAP from running basketball side-by-side with the volleyball tournament? Nothing.” Fernandez said in the interview.
Other plans are still lined up but there is uncertainty, according to the two UAAP officials. The Board Of Managing Directors (BMD) has been creative in coming up with different variations.
The UAAP will hand out the general championship award both in high school and college divisions, but no Athlete Of The Year award will be named. It is expected during the closing ceremony that the UAAP hosting for next season will be turned over to De La Salle University.
